Microsoft Tag Makes The World Your Barcode

Yesterday, Microsoft launched their much talked-about service, Tag, which places bar- or QR-code-like labels in physical places, or on objects or products, that can be scanned by mobile phones to provide new, on-the-fly information.

Microsoft claims that over a million tags have been created, with codes being placed on billboards and signs, in magazines, movie theaters and transit stops. The initial use of the service will be available for free to brands or small businesses wishing to utilize the Tag technology, as Microsoft attempts to expand their network.

Microsoft’s Aaron Getz explains:

“Today we can imagine a world where any physical object can become a gateway to a world of digital content and engagement: Scan a product in a newspaper, get a personalized offer, buy it on the spot, or get directions to the store to buy it later.

This is what Tag can do for you, for your users, for your marketing campaign, and for your business. All you have to do is simply click on things in your physical world to make your world interactive on the spot.”

What are barcodes and what are they used for?

Barcodes store machine-readable information and this information is read with the help of barcode readers, also called barcode scanners. The most common barcodes store less information than most of us would think, but their use saves businesses tremendous amounts of money and time. Typically, the primary purposes of the common, 1D barcode is to store a “code” that identifies specific product; in retail stores if barcodes weren’t used, each product’s information would have to be typed in manually at the register, which takes on average three times longer.

However, this is only one side of the process – when the product’s label is scanned by the barcode reader, not only the price of the product is obtained and added to the customer’s bill, but the item is deducted from the inventory’s list. In case when the inventory system is fully computerized, as soon as the stock of this item goes below certain level, either automatic order will be placed with the supplier, or the item will be added to a database of low-stock items and a manager will decide if more quantities need to be ordered.

Barcode and barcode readers are also widely used because they are inexpensive; of course, large industrial barcode readers can cost thousands of dollars, but they process enormous amount of barcode labels in a single day, so in the long run they are likely to save an organization hundreds of thousands. Large, omni-directional scanners are used in the postal offices for processing packages and at the airports for the same purpose – these scanners can read barcode labels that are wrinkled and even damaged, and are often used in conjunction with other sorting equipment in order to establish the parcel’s weight, origin, and destination.

Barcodes are also error-free! Well, almost – barcode scanning produces less than one error per one million characters, while manual writing and typing leads to one error per 300 characters. Barcode scanning is also much quicker – even with a handheld scanner, a label can be read in a matter of seconds.

Barcodes also allow information to be stored in a way that is tailored to a specific industry, which is possible by using different symbologies. Typically, the barcodes are used with database-driven software applications, and when specific types of barcode symbology become standard for an industry, this ensures smooth processing of goods and documentation.

What’s Difference Between Direct Thermal Printing And Thermal Transfer Printing

In the diverse world of print, labels used for shipping labels or barcodes that are mass produced are many times printed using either direct thermal or thermal transfer printing.  It may appear to be an archaic form of printing, considering we live in a digital age, but its uses are still necessary in day to day business.

Direct Thermal Printing

Direct thermal printing occurs when the printed image is creating by heating thermal paper. The coating on the paper turns black in the areas that are heated by the thermal print head.  There are also two color direct thermal printers that print black and a second color, often times red.  Some of the key benefits to direct thermal printing are that they generally print faster and quieter than dot matrix printers.  Also, the only consumable product for the printer is the label.  Direct thermal printers also have very little downtime because most can be refilled and printing can resume immediately.  Examples of machines that use or used thermal printing include:

• Receipt Printers
• Ultrasounds

Direct thermal printing is best in situations where the print is not intended to be stored for archival purposes or any other purpose that would require an extended period of time.  Also, direct thermal is less expensive than most other print methods in terms of supplies because there is no ribbon or additional products needed for the print other than the label.  If the printed label is overexposed to light or light the text or barcode will eventually be rendered unreadable.  The use of barcodes on products or shipping labels is usually not meant for permanent use.   In the case of short lived labels or receipts, direct thermal is your best option.

Thermal Transfer Printing

Instead of heating the paper to produce an image, thermal transfer printers have a print head that heats a ribbon containing ink and the heated ink gets transferred to the label.  Thermal transfer printing also takes advantage of using other materials to print on rather than thermal paper, such as polyester and polypropylene based media.  Also, a major advantage to thermal transfer is that with the use of ribbons, multiple colors can be produced on a print. Typical color thermal printers include CMYK color panels, but unlike dye or ink based printers, they cannot vary the size of color dots while printing, which doesn’t produce quality results seen in color laser or inkjet printers.  Color thermal printers are mostly used in industrial settings rather than home or personal environments.  Most of the same uses for thermal direct print can be applied for direct transfer print as well.

Interactive Barcodes in Newspaper Ads: The Next Frontier for Google?

Dan Frommer at Silicon Alley Insider alerts us to a new offering from Google: the ability to purchase ads within newspapers that contain a 2D bar code. If a consumer sees such an ad, they can capture a picture of the barcode, and special software will then de-code it and send them to a specified page on the mobile Web. Apparently, this advertising format is already gaining popularity in Japan.

Will it work in the US?

To be able to use barcode ads, you first need to download de-coding software to your phone. Google provides a link to a site Nokia has setupto download codes, as well as to a company called Kaywa that is offering a form of de-coding software. The problem here is that I know very few people who will go out of their way to download software that helps them participate in more advertising. For bar code ads to work, phones need to come pre-loaded with the software, meaning carriers and device manufacturers will ultimately decide when barcode ads take off, if ever.

What are the benefits?

For the most part, today’s print advertising is limited in terms of being able to measure response. You don’t necessarily know if someone is visiting your store or web site because of your ad. Google, through AdWords/AdSense has created perhaps the most advanced advertising measurement system in the world, and by making newspaper ads interactive, advertisers will have much more insight into how their ads are performing, and presumably, be able to get a better return on their investment. For consumers, the ad format beats writing down a phone number or cutting out a coupon.

When will it happen?

A mobile exec tells Frommer that probably only around 1% of phones in the US have the necessary software installed. Thus, while including a bar code in a print ad might be a nice novelty, it’s not likely to be a good investment at this time. That said, with Google Android ramping up this year with the support of most of the carriers, the company clearly has a plan for how to get the software on more phones. As usual, Google is aiming big on this one, and has a very clever strategy for making it work. However, I think it is likely still at least a few years until they get enough traction to make barcode ads commonplace.

Invisible Barcode Ink

Kodak has developed a virtually invisible clear ink this week which can be used for security applications, including identification of counterfeit versions of a wide range of printed materials.
Kodak NexPress Red Fluorescing Dry Ink is clear to the naked eye, said the company, but fluoresces red when illuminated with an appropriate ultraviolet light source.

The ink can be used to print unobtrusive images and non-reproducible barcodes which then can be read with specialised readers. It allows clear barcodes to be printed inline and can encompass variable data printing, allowing each printed piece to be marked with unique information, it said.
The ink and scanner combination was developed by Kodak in partnership with InData Systems which specialises covert or hidden bar codes for product authentication, tracking, and information retrieval.

"The red fluorescing barcode itself is the pass/fail authentication," said Kodak at the debut of the technology, which took place at the IPEX 2010 exhibition in Birmingham, UK, this week

"It is difficult to counterfeit and if the barcode does not light up for the UV reader, the document is not genuine."

The ink will be available commercially next month.

Barcode Labels – Print Your Own or Buy Pre-Printed?

If you are going to be using bar code labels, you need to consider whether to print them yourself with software, labels and maybe a dedicated bar code label printer, OR, whether you should just order from a company that specializes in printing labels. Here are some points to consider:

You probably want to BUY pre-printed labels IF;

1. You need a large quantity – thousands or tens of thousands. Printing that many labels all at once really ought to be done on a dedicated bar code printer.

2. Each label is exactly the same.

3. Bar code labels are sequentially numbered – maybe these are to track files or equipment. Someone at your company can either make mistakes, or intentionally replicate numbers, causing problems.

4. Permanent adhesion is planned. A specialized label can be non-removable and even indestructible.

5. Security is an issue – labels that you print yourself can be replicated. You might want a hologram on your labelthat is very hard to reproduce. A label company can provide that.

6. You need specialized tags – extra small, weather proof, metal (maybe for permanent attachment to fixed assets like computers, desks, chairs or outdoor equipment – think party rental equipment or machinery.

If you want to order labels, there are hundreds of companies that specialize in that. You can do an Internet search on terms such as “barcode label printing.” On the other hand, you might be better off printing your own if:

1. You need to put unique customer information on each label (addresses, purchase order numbers, weight, quantity.)
2. You do not need a lot of labels – maybe hundreds or a few thousand.
3. Each label is going to be a little bit different, perhaps depending on method of shipment, or the receiving vendor’s requirements.
4. You want to put bar codes on documents.
5. You want the flexibility of changing the label over time.
6. You plan to put photos or other images on the labels (like membership cards).

To print your own labels, there are two common approaches. The first involves using software on your computer to design and print labels. Labels can contain all kinds of data, not just bar codes. The second approach is to buy a dedicated bar code printer. There are many models that start around $200 and can do a nice job.

Most software products can print labels on your laser or ink jet printer or on a dedicated label printer. Bar codelabel printers come in various sizes and styles and a complete discussion of those here is not possible. However, suffice to say that label width is a common variable, with many printers handling labels up to 2 inches wide, others are 4 inches wide or bigger. Additionally a number of companies sell printers specifically for identification cards, or items like ski passes. If you plan to print ID cards, you are best off picking out the type of card, and printer manufacturer that you intend to use, and only then choosing software that runs that particular machine.
