How To Print Barcode On Zebra Printer Using ZPL

Here we will discuss on how to automatically print Barcodes on a zebra printer from Oracle concurrent program.

Below are the 3 approaches that we tried and was successful with the third approach.
1) Print Labels on a Zebra printer using BI Publisher

The first approach we tried was to print barcodes using BI(formerly XML) Publisher. The report generates a PDF output and should print directly on a Zebra printer using PASTA driver. For some reason the report was not printing directly on a printer. The PDF opened in window and printed separately/manually using Windows driver was working fine but not meeting our requirement of automatic printing. Hence we had to try second approach.

2) Print Labels using Zebra Enterprise Connector Solution

The Zebra Enterprise Connector Solution is designed to streamline the printing
process for companies using ERP systems such as Oracle BI Publisher. The Zebra
Enterprise Connector Solution helps to lower middleware costs, overhead, and
pre-printer licensing fees. It can be used with an unlimited number of
Zebra ZPL-II printers without additional per-printer licensing fees. We didn't do much research on this as were looking for an approach with minimal cost. More details on this is available at the website of Zebra

3) Print Labels on Zebra printers using Zebra Programming Language(ZPL)

The second and successful approach was to print labels using ZPL. A text output with all the zebra codes was created and which would ultimately print Barcode images on a printer. A normal regular lap command for printing text is used to print over Zebra Printers.

How Does Barcode Scanners Work?

Most of our customers, ask us about the working of barcode scanners, to make them clear, trridev blogs out this post.

So you want to know how barcode scanners work. Well, we first want to narrow down which type of barcode scanner we are talking about. There are many types of barcode scanners from laser scanners, CCD barcode scanners, imager type scanners, and more. Our first focus will be on how a CCD barcode scanner works.

The CCD barcode scanner is a scanner that has no moving parts. CCD stands for Charged-Coupled Devise Scanner. The scanner has a light source that when pointed to an object or barcode, it illuminates that image. The image is usually a barcode. Once the barcode is illuminated, a reflection is created and the barcode scanner reads that image.

How does the barcode scanner read the image? Well, there is a linear photodiode within the scanner head. This photodiode can read the reflected light off the lines on the barcode. This reflection is a digital image that is then scanned electronically within the devise. When the image is scanned electronically, each bar on the barcode is converted to the corresponding number or letter.

The barcode scanner is connected to a PC or Mac and the CCD scanner then sends the sequence of numbers and/or letters to the PC or Mac to populate the field of entry. This connection can be made in a number of ways. On way is with a keyboard wedge. This is a Y connection where one end of the Y connects to the keyboard and the other end of the Y connects to the scanner with the bottom of the Y plugging into the PC where the keyboard would normally connect. This method is used many times when the PC does not have enough interfaces. Serial is another connection method and works with just a straight serial cable from the barcode scanner directly to the PC serial connection. USB is now about the most popular method, because most PC’s and Mac’s today have many USB ports. Just plug and play!

Now we can look at how a laser barcode scanner works. The laser scanner works by sending a low energy light beam or laser beam to read the spacing between a pattern on the image one space at a time. The beam is moving back and forth by using a mobile mirror which causes a blinking effect. You can usually see the read line moving over the barcode. The reflection comes back and is then read by the fixed mirror in the scanner. The scanner then generates analog and digital signals that match the pattern. A barcode reader decoder then processes the information and sends it through the data communications interface.

How to Change the Ribbon on a Zebra Printer

Zebra printers are a line of specialty thermal printers including bar code, mobile bar code, RFID, kiosk and card models. Unlike traditional printers, Zebra printers print with a ribbon instead of an ink/toner cartridge. Zebra ribbons are available in wax, wax/resin and resin models. Wax ribbons are ideal for standard printing on paper material. Wax/resin ribbons are extremely durable against wear of chemicals on paper. Resin ribbons provide superior durability against chemicals and heat on synthetics. Zebra printers are equipped with Zebra's patented Load-N-Go feature. With this feature, changing the ribbon is partially automated and takes under two minutes. Changing the ribbon is a similar process for most Zebra models.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

• Replacement print ribbon

1. Step 1

   Turn the printer on before changing the ribbon. This allows the ribbon to synchronize correctly. Open the lid and push the blue release arrow forward. The release arrow is found above the print head carriage. The print head carriage houses the print spools.

2. Step 2

   Lift up the print head carriage (the blue release arrow is attached to it) and remove the used ribbon by pulling it toward you.

3. Step 3

   Hold the ribbon spool in your right hand with the white end facing the printer. In your left hand, hold the empty spool. Leave the blue tape on the new ribbon spool.

4. Step 4

   Place the ribbon on the spindle located directly under the print head carriage, and place the empty spool on the take-up spindle to the left of the carriage (this is the smaller spindle). The spindles are cone-shaped cylinders that fit neatly into the ribbon spool.

5. Step 5

   Press down on the print head carriage until it clicks back into position. The printer will automatically adjust the ribbon. After 20 seconds, the LCD screen will display "Ready."

About Barcode Scanners and Barcode Printers

There is a lot of confusion within the computer printer industry about the terms “OEM” “Compatible” and “Remanufactured”.

For the purposes of this article they are defined as follows:

“OEM” means Original Equipment Manufacturer

“Compatible” cartridges are new cartridges made by a third party supplier.

“Remanufactured” cartridges are original used cartridges that have been disassembled and all old toner cleaned out. Components have been replaced as required and the cartridge refilled with new toner, reassembled, tested and packaged for sale.

Drum units used in the two part system can be included in this definition although they are not strictly remanufactured as the unit is disassembled and cleaned, the worn drum replaced with a new one and the unit reassembled.

Note that both OEM cartridges and Compatible cartridges may contain material or parts that have been recycled. For example Hewlett Packard has the following statement on its cartridge box: -

“This original HP cartridge contains only genuine HP parts. Designated parts that meet HP’s original design specifications for high print quality and reliable performance may have been selectively recovered through HP’s return and recycling program.”

Most compatible and remanufactured laser toner cartridges sold in New Zealand are now made in Asia. The reason for this is that the Asian factories are able to produce and ship cartridges to New Zealand at a price that is close to, or below, the true cost of production in New Zealand.

The shift, from remanufacturing in NZ to sourcing compatible and remanufactured cartridges from Asia, has generally improved the overall quality of non-OEM toner cartridges available.

This improvement in quality is because reputable NZ suppliers buy from factories that comply with ISO9001 and ISO14001 and, for remanufactured cartridges, comply with STMC standards. All of which mean that they are producing cartridges to a strict quality standard.

STMC stands for the Standardised Test Methods Committee that works under the auspices of the International Imaging Technology Council. Details can be obtained from the IITC website.

As far as I am aware there are no STMC certified cartridge remanufacturers in New Zealand and none who are ISO9001 and ISO14001 compliant.

This means that both the compatible and remanufactured cartridges that are being supplied from the Asian factories are of a better standard than is or has previously been available in NZ and generally are as good as the original cartridges supplied by the printer manufacturers.

Reputable suppliers continue to uphold the environmental values inherent in reusing cartridges through remanufacturing by encouraging customers to return empty cartridges that are then sent back to Asia (usually via Australia where they are sorted and evaluated) for reuse or recycling.

Friday, June 26, 1974 was a day that would forever change the way POS was done. While the barcode had been in developmental stages for years before, it was not until this fated day that a supermarket in Troy, Ohio sold a pack of Wrigley’s Juicy fruit gum using an official UPC code and barcode scanner.

Prior to the barcode, there was no universal system for assigning products, and each company had their own system, leading to an error rate of about 1/300 characters, as opposed to 1/36,000,000,000,000 with barcode scanners. Today, UPC barcodes are scanned more than 10 billion times a day, across 25 different industries. The advent of the barcode produced significant economic and productivity benefits for both shoppers, retailers, and manufacturers alike.

What Is Barcode?

A barcode is an optical machine-readable representation of data, which shows certain data on certain products. Originally, barcodes represented data in the widths (lines) and the spacings of parallel lines, and may be referred to as linear or 1D (1 dimensional) barcodes or symbologies. They also come in patterns of squares, dots, hexagons and other geometric patterns within images termed 2D (2 dimensional) matrix codes or symbologies. Although 2D systems use symbols other than bars, they are generally referred to as barcodes as well. Barcodes can be read by optical scanners called barcode readers, or scanned from an image by special software.

The first use of barcodes was to label railroad cars, but they were not commercially successful until they were used to automate supermarket checkout systems, a task in which they have become almost universal. Their use has spread to many other roles as well, tasks that are generically referred to as Auto ID Data Capture (AIDC). Other systems are attempting to make inroads in the AIDC market, but the simplicity, universality and low cost of barcodes has limited the role of these other systems. It costs 0.5¢ (U.S.) to implement a barcode, while passive RFID still costs about 7¢ to 30¢ per tag.

Retail Sales Heats Up In Summer

Consumer durables retailers are reporting brisk sales owing to healthy summer sales and consumer finance companies renewing their offerings. Retailers in the category are also moving ahead with private labels to improve on the margins.

“The hot summer period has helped contribute growth in categories like refrigerators, air conditioners. The biggest growth has come from air conditioners. Other white goods like LCD and LED televisions are also posting double digit growth,” Mr B.A. Kondadarama Setty, Chairman and Managing Director, Vivek's Ltd, said.

The Chennai-based durables retailer has seen its sales pendulum swing towards a positive growth. While Bajaj Finance and Shriram Finance offer consumer finance, the company by itself is also looking to attract footfalls with various schemes like extended warranty and after sales network. It may be recalled that consumer finance companies had opted out of durables financing following the economic downturn.

According to Mr Nitish Tipnis, President, eZone, the durable arm of Future Group, said, “We are not ready to accept the growth we had last year. We want more and we are working towards improving it through various modes. Energy-efficient products and consumer finance have helped boost consumption.”

He said at least 15 per cent sales is attributed to consumer finance. “Consumer finance is a huge pie. “We have our own captive Future Money on which we have capitalised,” Mr Tipnis said, adding that modern trade business will see a spike in the next couple of years.

Besides, it is also focussing on growing its own private label brand. “Our private brand Koryo is doing brisk business. Currently, our entire private brand contributes about 12-13 per cent to the total turnover. We are looking to scale it up in a big way.” eZone has 62 stores pan-India and it is looking to add 22 more stores this fiscal.

Reliance Digital President and Chief Executive, Mr Ajay Baijal, says with consumers gaining confidence in the company, it is looking to scale up its business. “We are seeing high double digit same-store growth. While air conditioners account for the largest portion of business, LCD panels too are witnessing a sales surge.”

On the company's strategy on private labels, he said, “Private label is a game of scale. It is not easy to play the game and companies face big risk as compared to manufacturers. We are examining opportunity in certain small appliances and accessories.”

Need Of Barcode Printer In Current Trend

A barcode is a machine-readable representation of information in a visual format on a surface. Barcode is widely used to implement Auto ID Data Capture (AIDC) systems that improve the speed and accuracy of computer data entry.

A barcode printers is a computer peripheral for printing barcode labels or tags that can be attached to physical objects. Barcode printers are commonly used to label cartons before shipment, or to label retail items with Universal Product Codes.

Desktop barcode printers has become a commonplace tool for entering product information at retail chains and shopping complexes. Industrial barcode printers are used in manufacturing facilities and large warehouses helping in inventory management and sales process automation.

The most common barcode standards are UPCs and EANs.

Universal Product Code Bar Code – The standard bar code printed on retail merchandise. It contains the vendor’s identification number and the product number which is read by passing the bar code over a scanner.

European Article Numbering is the European standard for barcodes. There are two different versions of EAN bar codes, EAN-13 and EAN-8, which encode 13- and 8-digit numbers, respectively. A special EAN-13 bar code with a 5-digit supplemental code is used on books to encode the International Standard Book Number (ISBN) and the price. This bar code is called “Bookland”.

Traditional one-dimensional bar codes use the bar’s width to encode a product or an account number. Two-dimensional bar codes, such as PDF417, MaxiCode and DataMatrix, are scanned horizontally and vertically and hold considerably more data. PDF417 is widely used for general purposes. MaxiCode is used for high-speed sorting, and DataMatrix is used for marking small parts.

Barcode Printers employ two major printing methods – Direct Thermal (DT) and Thermal Transfer (TT).

Direct thermal printers use a print head to generate heat that causes a chemical reaction in specially designed paper that turns the paper black. Direct thermal printers are generally less expensive, but they produce labels that can become illegible if exposed to heat, direct sunlight, or chemical vapors. Barcode printers require regular cleaning of the ribbon and the print head. Specks of dust may cause distortion of the bar codes. The outputs of these printers using ANSI software need to be continuously checked in order to check for system malfunctions.

Thermal transfer printers also use heat, but instead of acting directly on the paper, the heat melts a waxy or resin substance on a ribbon that runs over the label or tag material. The heat transfers ink from the ribbon to the paper. Thermal Transfer requires the use of a heated ribbon to produce long-lasting images of data onto a label and/or tag, whereas Direct Thermal process prints the image directly on the label/tag.

Direct thermal and thermal transfer barcode printers can print bar code labels on variety of media. The range of bar code printers vary from light duty printers to rugged and high speed industrial printers for meeting diverse requirements. In industrial printers, the range varies from medium to heavy duty to extra heavy duty printers. These printers can be integrated to existing applications / ERP for on demand label/tag printing.

Industrial barcode printers are used in large warehouses and manufacturing facilities. They have large paper capacities, operate faster and have a longer service life. For retail and office environments, desktop barcode printers are most common.
